I just this second noticed that all three cats are sporting the same mustache. Perhaps those aren't real...
Take a closer look, Ernie.
First off, cats have whiskers, which have become mustaches in the World of Flora. The red-and-black headed cat has a red-and-black mustache. The cat standing on his hind legs has a black mustache and red lips. The cat laying on his back playing the horn has a very curly black mustache and black lips.
So, the three cats are mambo-ing with three different mustaches, and, yes, they are real. Jim Flora would -never- have put a fake mustache on a cat. The man had true artistic scruples.
My own cat has a white mustache, and he's got great chops when playing the mambo!
To Irwin and Barbara: We dedicated Floraphiles all know that artificially mustachioed pussycats were not part of Flora's artistic idiom.
I hope this helps to resolve any further cat-mustache confusion.
Ernie: Though it's rarely acknowledged, Flora was one of the great artistic realists. Everything that emerged from his paintbrush was a truthful and accurate depiction of the world as he saw it. Paula is correct that Flora would not depict faux facial hair on a feline. The family archives contain photos of those mustachioed kitties lazing around Flora's studio in the 1950s. I am uncertain of the breed, but rare would be an understatement.

OK, you convinced me on the mustaches. But these poor pussies only have two toes on each foot. Well, the one-drum cat has three on his front blue paw, but all the rest are bi-toed quadrapeds. Everyone knows real cats have six toes...
Ernie, I hate to nitpick, but a cat with six toes is polydactyl.
From Wikipedia on Polydactyl cats: "Normal cats have four toes and one dewclaw (thumb) on each front paw and four toes on each hind paw. Polydactyl cats may have as many as seven digits on front and/or hind paws, and various combinations of anywhere from four to seven are common, although each of the front and rear paws are typically the same."
So, Flora's pussycats could have as many -- or as few -- toes as he artistically desired.
I hope that this clarifies the pussy-toe issue.
